Sandburg was represented by 14 students at this year’s Leading Illinois Together Conference, which was hosted by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and the Illinois Community College Student Activities Association on Oct. 10-11 at Illinois Central College.

More than 250 student leaders and their advisors from 26 different community colleges around the state gathered to learn and network through speakers, educational sessions and idea share-outs to help them grow as leaders, better serve their peers and leave a lasting impact on their campuses.

"The ripple effect of students attending something like this is immeasurable,” said Genny Stevens, director of student engagement & leadership. “The bonds they create with each other that wouldn't otherwise happen at home, the inspiration they get from listening to shared experiences or new perspectives that they might never have thought of, or the connections they make through other schools will have lasting impressions on both the student and their campus. This is the kind of event where a student leaves more confident in themselves and the leadership they bring back to their organizations. The memories they made will not only help shape their success at Sandburg and beyond but also become part of who they are forever.”

Stevens also serves as the treasurer of the ICCSAA and was a member of the planning committee for this year’s conference. This marked the second year of the ICCSAA and PTK joining forces for this event, which continues to grow in attendance and impact.

“Before this, each would plan and host their own student conference,” Stevens said. “Each had some successes, but the value and purpose it has given both students and advisors now allows each organization to do more together than they could apart."
